Accredited Summer Only Programs in Armenia1. The University of Michigan, Ann Arbor The University of Michigan Armenian Studies Program is pleased to announce this year's Summer Institute which is to be held from June 28 through August 25, 2008, in Yerevan, Armenia. The program offers a unique opportunity to study the Armenian language in an intensive, eight-week long format. This year, our Summer Institute is being expanded by the addition of a new, six-week long course on Armenian history and contemporary Armenia in the form of lectures and discussions to be held concurrently, from July 7 to August 15, 2008. The Summer Institute is open to all undergraduate, graduate and professional school students, attending any North American or European colleges or universities, who wish to enroll in one of the following four sections: Classical, Eastern, or Western Armenian languages, or Armenian history. A series of lectures on Armenian culture and an extensive program of excursions and cultural events will supplement the courses. North American undergraduate students may take any of the courses for credit (8 credit hours) or non-credit. North American graduate students enroll for a non-credit certificate for Eastern or Western Armenian, and may take Classical Armenian for credit (6 hours). European students may take any of the courses for a non-credit certificate only. The same academic and program criteria will apply to credit and non-credit students. A few partial scholarships, based on need, may be available. In addition to high quality intensive language and history instruction the program offers the opportunity to live and learn in Armenia. The program is directed by Dr. Kevork Bardakjian, Marie Manoogian Professor of Armenian Language and Literature. Experienced and qualified instructors, including from the University of Michigan and Yerevan State University, will teach the courses. UNIVERSITY OF GEORGIA (ATHENS, GA) THEME:International Business & Relations WHEN: May 2008 THE PROGRAM: The University of Georgia (Athens, GA) is pleased to offer a 3-week study abroad and cultural experience course in Armenia in International Business & Relations for Maymester 2008 (May 13 - June 3). The program allows students to experience the rich cultural, religious and historical heritage of Armenia and exposes them to the geo-political and economic developments in the post-Soviet transition economies. The group will be accommodated in Yerevan (Yerevan State University's Foreign Guest House) and will make daily field trips throughout Armenia to visit major businesses (Yerevan Brandy Company, diamond processing, wine production, hand made carpets and rugs, high technologies), major political and international organizations (Government, Parliament, WB, IMF, EU, UN, US Embassy) and sights of historical significance. ELIGIBILITY: The program is open to all college students in the United States who wish to gain genuine on-site experience in Armenian economy, politics, culture, language, and religion. ESTIMATED COST (in US dollars): The estimated cost of the program is $2,100+airfare. This includes accommodations in Armenia, local transportation during the stay and field trips, airport transfers, three meals per day, visa, insurance, admissions to museums and language instruction (Armenian and/or Russian). Additional expenses not included are UGA tuition and fees, spending money for gifts, eating out, phone, laundry, etc. Non-UGA students are allowed to pay in-state tuition for this program. CREDITS: The course is offered for 6 credit hours from the University of Georgia (UGA). Students should register for AAEC 4910/6910 (International Agribusiness Marketing and Management: Focus on Armenia) and AESC 3150 (Topics in International Agriculture). Additionally, non-UGA students can register (or substitute AESC 3150) for extra credit at their departments given the approval of student advisors. Students should check with their college or university to determine the transferability of UGA credits to their institution. TRAVEL FELLOWSHIP: Travel fellowships are available to qualified applicants who are accepted into the UGA Study Abroad & Cultural Experience Program and then opt to extend their stay by another five weeks doing community service in Armenia to meet the 8-week minimum requirement through Birthright Armenia/Depi Hayk (BR/DH). The travel fellowship covers full reimbursement of roundtrip economy class airfare at the average price for that period upon successful completion of the program and other BR/DH requirements. The University: Students will study at Yerevan State University, which was founded on May 16, 1919. There are over 110 departments. The university has approximately 9,500 undergraduates, including 300 students from abroad. The Program: The Yerevan practicum is a special three-week, two-credit intensive “course” for student who completed the nine-week CLI class at Arizona State University that will expand language skills and introduce the modern culture of Armenia. Eligibility: The Yerevan practicum is open to all ASU and non-ASU undergraduate and graduate students, as well as to non-degree students. Normally, participants in the Yerevan practicum will have completed at least one year of intensive Armenian language study at ASU in the nine-week summer Critical Languages Institute. Living Accommodations: Students are housed at the Yerevan State University foreign guest house located in the city’s historic center. Rooms are double occupancy with amenities. Breakfast is included and other meals are prepared on request. Meals are part of the estimated program cost. Estimated Cost: $1,200 includes program fees, housing, meals, excursions, and local round trip transport from the Yerevan International airport. Not included: round trip airfare from Phoenix to Yerevan, passport costs, books, and personal expenses. Tuition for this two-credit practicum has been waived by ASU Summer Sessions.
