Travelogues: summer of 2004
 |
"I came to Armenia with the
New York Armenian Students Association (NY-ASA). Both my internship
and volunteer time have been extraordinary. Initially, I came
to Armenia simply to see my ancestral homeland, but there
are so many opportunities to volunteer and so much to see
that two months will not be nearly enough." |
|
My main project is an internship in the legal department
of Ameria Consulting. The work environment in Yerevan is
radically different to that in the US. The end result is
that I've learned that you can do a lot more than you think
with a lot less. For example, for a short period of time,
7 people shared 2 computers and one phone line. It sounds
crazy, but you learn to be more resourceful and efficient.
This is perhaps something that Armenians know all too well.
I have also volunteered some time at Birthright
Armenia and carried out a project with Armenia 2020, a think-tank
devoted to the development of Armenia. Everybody I have
met professionally has been very friendly, beyond competent,
and we have developed a mutually rewarding relationship.
I learn about Armenia and they, if they don't already know,
learn about the US.
However, after being here for a few weeks,
you cannot overlook the lives of people who do not have
much - the people who suffer from the poor economic conditions
of the country. As development comes slowly, many people
go
without proper health care and basic utilities. It's not
! ! a simple life in Armenia, but a hard life. I cannot change
Armenia today, but learning more about the conditions of
the country and her people have been invaluable. I can't
wait to see what progress has been made by the year 2020".
