Travelogues: summer of 2004

While in Armenia I interned at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs through the Armenian Assembly of America’s Summer Internship Program. I was given the opportunity to edit official Ministry press releases, research and investigate pertinent legal topics, and to compose a running series of articles relating to diasporan issues for the Ministry’s sister Web site, ArmeniaDiaspora.com. I worked alongside interns from a variety of volunteer organizations, and each of us were given many solid, important assignments which consistently allowed us to exhibit our individual skills, as well as expand our horizons.

Having the opportunity to be fully immersed in Armenian culture allowed me to realize where I came from, and eventually, to realize who I am. I learned so much more Armenian than I came here with, and know so much more about the culture than I ever have, even after going to Armenian school for three years. I've definitely gained a sense of self-understanding, and a link to my past, which I've always wanted, but didn't know how to achieve. And, most importantly to me, I made some GREAT friends along the way.

Aside from the obvious airfare incentive, I would highly recommend that others participate in the Birthright Armenia/Depi Hayk program. The familiar atmosphere became a safety net for all of us diasporans who were working here in Armenia, and because of it, I met people through the program that I might never have met otherwise. And those relationships directly led to a deepening of the entire experience, because I was exposed to realizations and thoughts that I definitely identified with, but wouldn't have come up with on my own.

I've done internships before, but this was by far the most fulfilling experience I've ever had, both professionally and personally. We were so lucky to be handed every opportunity to enjoy the country to its fullest while we were here.
