Embracing Heritage and Making a Difference

2 min read

Zara Ratevosjan's story is one of self-discovery, cultural immersion, and making a positive impact. Born in The Netherlands and raised in the town of Maasbracht, Zara had a unique upbringing, balancing her Armenian heritage within a predominantly Dutch social circle. However, her path took an exciting turn when she embarked on a life-changing journey with Birthright Armenia.

A Journey of Cultural Immersion and Self-Discovery

Having recently graduated with a background in health and nutrition, Zara felt a deep longing to connect more closely with her Armenian roots and learn about her ancestral homeland. The opportunity to participate in Birthright Armenia's program came at the perfect moment, offering her the chance to not only learn the language but also gain work experience and explore Armenia alongside fellow Armenians from around the world.

“My upbringing was very Armenian—I spoke only Armenian to my parents, but my social circle outside of my home was very Dutch. I only had Dutch friends until the age of 17 and no Armenian friends. All that changed since starting at Birthright Armenia.”

Zara's journey began in early March, with her program set to continue until August. Her motivations for joining Birthright Armenia were multifaceted. She sought to overcome her language insecurities, deepen her understanding of Armenia, and acquire valuable work experience in her field. Additionally, the prospect of meeting other Armenians who shared a similar heritage and passion for their roots was an exciting bonus.

    Impactful Projects and Community Engagement

During her time in Armenia, Zara became involved with the ACA Brain Health Armenia Project, a program dedicated to supporting the elderly. She actively participated in their weekly memory café sessions, providing companionship and organizing engaging activities for those experiencing memory challenges or feelings of loneliness. Zara also took the opportunity to contribute her expertise in health and nutrition by giving a small lecture on the subject and assisting the project's staff.

Zara's dedication to making a difference extended beyond her work with Brain Health Armenia Project. She played an integral role in creating an educational plan for mothers and children in Artsakh, organizing online workshops and developing educational games to enhance their learning experience. Furthermore, Zara eagerly took on the task of crafting a comprehensive nutrition guide for the Wigmore Clinic, with the aim of promoting healthier lifestyles and well-being.

Reflecting on her experience, Zara highlights the profound impact of connecting with Armenians from around the world as the true highlight of her journey. “Having never had Armenian friends before, I cherish the bonds formed with individuals who share my heritage and similar experiences. Through Birthright Armenia, I found a sense of community and belonging that has enriched my life in countless ways,” she explains.

However, Zara's journey was not without challenges. Learning a new language and immersing herself in a different culture presented hurdles along the way. Yet, these challenges only served to strengthen her resolve and determination. Zara's persistence and eagerness to overcome obstacles demonstrate the incredible growth that Birthright Armenia fosters in its participants.

    The Power of Birthright Armenia

When asked if she would recommend Birthright Armenia, Zara's response is unequivocal. She wholeheartedly recommends the program to those seeking to connect with fellow Armenians, improve their command of the Armenian language, and explore Armenia from a fresh perspective. Birthright Armenia offers a unique opportunity to engage in daily life and work while also discovering the beauty of Armenia through excursions and cultural immersion.

Zara Ratevosjan's journey with Birthright Armenia is an inspiring testament to the transformative power of connecting with one's heritage and making a positive impact. Through her involvement with various projects and her unwavering enthusiasm, Zara embodies the mission and spirit of Birthright Armenia, leaving an indelible mark on both her own life and the communities she touched.

As Zara's adventure continues, her story serves as a reminder that embracing one's roots, overcoming challenges, and embracing new experiences can lead to a profound and fulfilling journey of self-discovery.
